Asian foot-binding was an extreme and tragic practice that began in the 10th century and was outlawed in the 20th century.

Perceived as a status symbol and a mark of beauty, these “golden lotus” feet were achieved by breaking the toe and foot bones of a girl between the ages of 4 and 9. Their feet would then be bent in upon themselves and bandaged tightly.

In an agonizing procedure, the feet would be periodically unbound and unfolded for cleaning/nail clipping before being rebroken into shape.
