This is a real Peruvian elongated mummy head! Likely dating back to 800-100BCE, this artifact of the Paracas culture is an incredible historical specimen!

In what is now the Ica Region of Peru, these peoples practiced cranial modification (cradle-boarding) on their infants to create abnormal skull development. This would typically be done between 1-6 months after birth when the human skull is most pliable. 

It is believed that the altering of a child's head could be to denote higher status in a society or follow pseudoscientific beliefs that it would enhance the function of the brain.
