A rock hyrax (Procavia capensis) is a medium-sized mammal resembling a guinea pig with short ears and tail, weighing an average of 8.8 lbs (4 kg).

Incredibly enough, the closest living relatives of the Rock Hyrax are elephants and manatees!

Rock Hyrax are generally found in Africa and the Middle East, sticking to rocky areas where it’s easier for them to escape from predators. For that purpose they are also known to use sentries that issue alarm calls whenever predators approach – one of the few species to do so.

Their diet is mainly herbivorous, consisting of a huge variety of plants, as well as some insects. They mature at 16 months, reach adulthood at about 3 years of age and live for about 10 years.
